back for more aid & then
back again with Lt. & FA observer
laid smoke screen - Bob hit -
artillery & smoke Nelan came
to us hands raised in surrender
- hole in helmet - everyone went
back Co. pulled out - four hrs.
until litter bearer came for
Bob & other fellow - water & soft
mud kept shrapnel from
flying - 88s landed close morters
stayed in barn that night
patrol went after Moss - Nelan
led them - received equip. swiped
big shovel fr. kitchen.

Notes from Bob Hall:

Laid down smoke screen for us to recon. By the time we got there it had
blown away and I was hit.  That's when the 4 of us stretcher bearers
crawled back behind earthen dike and they exploded in mud and we were
covered, your Dad told me later.  I remember I would wake up and ask your
Dad how things were and he would say "just fine". He stayed with me, you
know, until they could come out and get me, at night, I think.
