stayed in barn - nice friendly people.
- moved to area along dyke - dug in
remained for several days - assault
boats - big scare - observation post.
laid wire. took boats back & stayed in
barn again - moved some distance - dug
in & moved out thru torn up
town. dug in on side of dyke - roast
chicken. enormous carrots - steak
- moved in trucks to Aachen area

rode all day & night - arr. in hilly wooded
area east of Aachen - transferred to 1st
squad Belcher - scout w. Nelan - too rocky to dig
in - nights pitch black - replacement
1st army (1st div) big drive to commence
noon. Trucks took us to small group of houses
- dug in. raining - muddy - finally quartered
in house. Cleaned out small shed at
rear of house (pig, rabbit hutch) put hay
on floor.  remained on alert to move out
at 2AM for several days. waited for
weather to clear in order to have air
attack preceding big drive. touch of
trench foot soaked feet hrs. to bring them
to normal again. - pancakes galore for
breakfast.  finally pulled
out 4AM - marched through town & dug
in on hill about dawn 9AM - air
attack.  hundreds of planes. moved
out in afternoon C Co in lead to take
position in woods 1st plat. lead -
waited along side road firing ahead Lt.
Levin killed.  tough resistance - dark
