before we could move on - moved along road past house - cows dead in field across several large fields - mg's opened up on us from three directions - pinned in field - Nelan & I both in mortar hole - flares - mg. casualties. retreated past hedgerows & dug in with Pappas next to Cpt. Barker. - Col orders to reach woods - capt. pleaded - many casualties already - secured shovel from dead body - tried to move on - Lt. Moore killed - had to retire & dig in - prepared to defend at daylight - received order to retreat - mass movement back to town - dawn. stayed in broken down store. learned that tanks over ran last night's positions - 20 casualties General shook Capt. hand for job so well done. Had been in enemies rear behind their lines. B Co launched attack next day with aid of P47's Stars & Stripes article of attack gross falsehood. Enemy retired. moved out at night past field of action to position in woods around houses which were cleared in morn. |
