in attack - 5 light tanks under his
command - placed them in positions
to fire on hill - mg's opened up w. artillery
4th of July effect - rods of tracers formed
plane of fire - noise was deafening.
moved toward hill taking cover offered by
house corners & trees - 1 man brought
back wounded - hill encircled by
several rows of trenches - crossed these
& struggled up steep hill - top was like
plateau - dug in under artillery
fire - used shell hole full of water for
start - shelled all night - long - 2
counter attacks, no sleep. Kept
digging - side of fox hole caved in
by dud - several prisoners rounded
up in morning - one wounded -
27 taken from dug out - Acosta
& Phelps found dead in morning
ground pock-marked with shell
holes - moved to buildings for
slight rest. Thanksgiving dinner -
letters & 1 & only package.  guard duty
2 hrs before dawn - issued new clothes
moved kitchen camp back from hospital
moved out again cleared line of bldgs.
no trouble - dug in at edge of group
of bldgs. - small town in distance
artillery time fire bursting ahead
as we moved toward town
