leading Co. by approx 100 yds. held back
all of a sudden I saw flash from barn - behind to
left front & another shell burst behind
called attention to enemy fire of sqd ldr.
Keep up with 3rd plat. scouts - kept
going scout on rt. first to be hit - enemy
opened up with rifle mg. & burp guns
sought safety behind beet pile with
Kushin & Renshaw.  Scout on left
killed by mortar  Everyone down
& digging - rose on their knees to
fire - mg bullets shredded beets
above our heads - dug in fast
shrapnel plucked into earth
& beets around us.  - bullet
ripped hole in Renshaw's helmet
Co. finnaly withdrew could
see tracers reaching out after
anyoune who got up to run.  Decided
to wait till dark to get back -
scared - prayed - hours went by
finally captured "The war is over
for you boys!"  Took us behind
their lines into bldg where we
were searched & taken further
back - P47's straffed - artillery
fire continuous - went from
