July 11. 1945 Boarded SS. Andrew
Moore & sailed from Manchester
Canal 1100 hours. 15 day trip
Delicious dinner - roast beef, pees
potatoes, spinach, bread, jam
ice cream, coffee - good to the
last bite. About 500 men on
board including crew.
July 12. Sailed south in Irish Sea.
Turned west at Sibna Is. & lost
sight of land. 4:30 passed mine ops
ship swinging around & gun
crews ready to fire on mine.
Made two circles fired with 20's
& sunk "mine" Weather
cleared but still windy & cool
I just saw the Great Waltz &
now up on deck the Blue Danube
is still ringing in my ears
as I look over the placid ocean
so blue - just like ink.
The sun is lowon the horizon
partially hidden by a few
billowy purple clouds. Its
rays strem upward toward
the heavens like searchlights
proclaiming a premier.
How blue the water is! I
swear if I dipped a pen
into the ocean it would
write blue. Yet the frow
of the ship transformes
the water into a snow white
foam just as a magician
